The Scaffolding and Formwork Engineer is responsible for the complete lifecycle of temporary structures on construction sites. This includes the conceptual and detailed structural design, technical calculation, material optimization, and on-site inspection of all formwork (shuttering) and scaffolding systems. The role ensures that all temporary works are safe, cost-effective, structurally sound, and compliant with both international standards and local safety regulations.

1. Engineering & Design

• Design and analyze temporary structures, including heavy-duty shoring, hanging scaffolding, system formwork (wall, column, slab), and custom timber/steel shuttering.
• Perform rigorous structural calculations (load-bearing capacities, wind loads, lateral concrete pressure) to ensure the stability of temporary works.
• Generate detailed assembly drawings, layouts, section details, and Bill of Quantities (BOQ) using CAD/BIM software.

2. Site Supervision & Safety Quality Control

• Inspect temporary structures on-site prior to concrete pouring or usage to issue "Permit to Load" or scaffolding tags (Green/Red tags).
• Monitor the correct erection, modification, and dismantling of formwork and scaffolding sequences according to approved Method Statements.
• Collaborate closely with the HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) department to identify potential hazards and implement risk-mitigation strategies for working at heights.

3. Commercial & Material Management

• Evaluate and optimize formwork cycle times to match or accelerate the project schedule.
• Coordinate with procurement and suppliers to source cost-effective, high-quality temporary work systems (rental vs. purchase analysis).
• Manage inventory on-site, ensuring proper maintenance, storage, and minimization of material damage or wastage.

4. Technical Support & Submittals

• Review and approve technical submittals, shop drawings, and design calculations provided by subcontractors or third-party suppliers.
• Prepare Method Statements and Risk Assessments specifically tailored to complex temporary works sequences.

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.
• Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience in civil construction, specifically focusing on formwork and scaffolding design and site execution.
• Technical Proficiencies:
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD (2D/3D).
• Strong working knowledge of structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD Pro, SAP2000, or Robot Structural Analysis).
• Familiarity with specialized formwork software (e.g., Doka Formwork Design, Peri CAD) is highly advantageous.
• Codes & Standards: In-depth knowledge of international standards such as OSHA (29 CFR 1926 Subpart L/Q), British Standards (BS EN 12811/12812), and ACI (347-Guide to Formwork for Concrete).
• Certifications: Scaffolding Inspector or Competent Person certification (OSHA/CITB) is preferred.

• Analytical Thinking: Ability to solve complex structural engineering problems under tight deadlines.
• Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to bridge the gap between site laborers, project managers, and clients.
• Attention to Detail: Zero-tolerance mindset for safety oversights; precision-driven regarding structural integrity.
• Adaptability: Ability to react quickly and safely to unexpected site conditions or design changes.
