Job Summary

The Generator Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of diesel and gas-powered generators and associated electrical and mechanical systems. The role requires expertise in generator operation, preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and ensuring equipment reliability and safety.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Responsibilities

- Diagnose and repair electrical faults in generators, control panels, alternators, and automatic transfer switches (ATS).

- Perform electrical testing, insulation resistance testing, and load bank testing.

- Install and commission generator electrical systems according to manufacturer specifications.

Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.

- Inspect and maintain batteries, charging systems, sensors, relays, and control circuits.

- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards and regulations.

Mechanical Responsibilities

- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel and gas generators.

- Diagnose and repair engine, fuel, cooling, lubrication, and exhaust system issues.

- Replace defective mechanical components such as pumps, belts, hoses, filters, injectors, and bearings.

Conduct engine overhauls and major repairs when required.

- Monitor generator performance and identify potential mechanical failures.

- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.

General Duties

- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance schedules.

- Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide timely repairs.

- Prepare service reports and maintenance documentation.

- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with company procedures.

- Coordinate with customers, supervisors, and other technical staff regarding maintenance activities.

- Maintain tools, equipment, and spare parts inventory.

Qualifications

- Diploma or Technical Certification in Electrical, Mechanical, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field.

- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in generator maintenance and repair.

- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, alternators, control systems, and ATS equipment.

- Ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings and technical manuals.

- Valid driver's license.

Required Skills

- Electrical troubleshooting and fault-finding.

- Mechanical repair and maintenance expertise.

- Knowledge of generator brands such as Cummins, Perkins, Caterpillar, FG Wilson, MTU, or similar.

- Ability to use diagnostic and testing equipment.

- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

- Ability to work independently and under pressure.

- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations.

- Working Conditions

- Work may be performed at customer sites, industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and remote locations.

- Availability for emergency call-outs, overtime, and shift work as required.

- Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in various -

weather conditions.
