Mō te tūranga | About the role

As a Ranger specialising in weed management, you will be a part of a team of Rangers working across the islands of Tikapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf).

Your work will be part of a ‘roving’ weed team living and working across several islands including 4 months on Rangitoto-Motutapu, 4 months on Te Hauturu-o-Toi, and sorter stints on Tiritiri Matangi, Motuihe, Motuora, Kawau and some smaller unmanned islands near Motuora (Te Haupa and Moturekareka). The work roster may involve a combination of 10 days on, 4 days off or a 5-day working week depending on island work programmes. 

Accommodation is provided for the duration of the shift, and the ranger is expected to live on island during this time and to come off island during their rostered days off. This applies to all islands except for Hauturu due to its remoteness.

The position will be focussed on:

• Participate in grid-search priority areas for weeds across island locations  
• Be a part of weed control operations using both manual and agrichemical-based techniques  
• Ensure accurate recording of all waypoints and tracklogs using GPS systems

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:

• Practical experience in weed and pest management techniques 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, GIS applications, GPS and field-based communication devices 
• Ability to live in shared accommodation on remote islands for extended periods 
• Backcountry experience with high level of physical fitness for rugged and remote terrain 
• Strong health and safety focus with ability to lead safety practices 
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
• Ability to collaborate, communicate and build relationships effectively with Iwi, community groups, and landowners. 
• Full New Zealand Driver’s Licence. 
  
  

Desirable:

• Growsafe, 4WD and Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) qualifications 
• Current First Aid Certificate.
