1. Purpose of the Role

The Expert will serve as the resident authority on animal welfare and species management across the site’s animal operations and events - establishing standards, overseeing daily care, ensuring regulatory compliance, and advising management on the long-term wellbeing of the animals in the site’s care. The role extends beyond an initial assessment to continuous, hands-on responsibility for the animals throughout their time on-site.

2. Role Objectives

The Expert will be responsible for delivering against the following objectives on an ongoing basis:

•  Safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of all animals at the site.

•  Establish and maintain welfare, husbandry, and enclosure standards aligned with recognized best practice.

•  Ensure continuous compliance with applicable wildlife and animal-welfare regulations.

•  Act as animal-experience advisor for pop-up events - advising on how to deliver animal experiences and what is required in terms of setup.

3. Key Responsibilities

3.1 Species Records & Inventory Management

On appointment, the Expert will conduct a full survey to document all animal species present, using standard field methods, and establish a species inventory. Collected data will be cross-referenced against regional and international wildlife databases - including the National Centre for Wildlife (NCW) registries, the IUCN Red List, and the CITES appendices - to flag species of concern or protected status. On an ongoing basis, the Expert will:

•  Provide updated lists of available animals for upcoming and ongoing projects.

•  Track and confirm animal inventory, including births, deaths, and health issues.

•  Review proposed species and recommend suitable alternatives where required.

3.2 Animal Welfare

The Expert will oversee the day-to-day welfare of all animals, monitoring conditions on-site and taking appropriate measures to ensure the health and safety of every species. Welfare will be managed against a recognized framework (the Five Domains model or the Five Freedoms), covering nutrition, environment, health, behaviour, and mental state, with enrichment and habitat standards maintained accordingly. In addition, the Expert will:

•  Provide species-specific welfare and habitat guidance for each project - enclosure, back-of-house (BOH), and habitat dimensions; safe and suitable materials; and enrichment requirements.

•  Review and approve animal-related designs and 3D models.

•  Assess entertainment shows, music schedules, roaming acts, and other activities to ensure they do not negatively affect animal welfare.

3.3 Health & Veterinary Oversight

The Expert will oversee animal health programs - including routine monitoring, preventive care, and coordination with veterinary services - and will identify, escalate, and act on any condition presenting a risk to animal health or welfare without delay.

3.4 Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

The Expert will ensure the site remains compliant with all applicable wildlife, animal-welfare, and biosafety regulations, maintaining the permits, records, and documentation required by the relevant authorities and serving as the point of contact on regulatory matters. Specifically, the Expert will:

•  Manage and follow up on animal-related legal documentation in coordination with suppliers and relevant authorities.

•  Coordinate with NCW and responsible internal stakeholders on required permits and documentation.

•  Ensure required approvals and documentation are completed for animal sourcing, transport, relocation, and operations.

3.5 Team Management & Operational Protocols

The Expert will lead the on-site animal-care function, uphold operating standards, and advise management on species management, breeding and conservation initiatives, and the welfare implications of operational decisions. This includes:

•  Directly overseeing and managing the dedicated animal-keeper team and veterinary resources where applicable.

•  Providing detailed animal-interaction protocols covering visitor capacity, timing, handling, and safety precautions.

•  Overseeing implementation of feeding instructions by keepers across all locations.

•  Guiding and training animal-care staff to maintain consistent welfare and safety standards.

4. Build-Up, Delivery & Dismantling

Across project set-up, operation, and close-down, the Expert will:

•  Ensure construction and habitat buildouts comply with approved specifications for each species.

•  Conduct animal welfare review and approval during project implementation.

•  Coordinate animal arrivals and ensure animals are on-site at least 10 days before opening.

•  Coordinate with procurement, commercial, and logistics teams for safe and timely animal delivery.

•  Confirm appropriate permanent or temporary housing for animals during event closure.

•  Ensure safe and species-appropriate animal transport and relocation.

•  Confirm that no dismantling begins until all animals have been safely relocated.

5. Ongoing Deliverables

The Expert will provide, on a continuing basis:

•  Species inventory & records - a maintained register of all species, annotated with conservation status and protection flags, and updated for births, deaths, and health issues.

•  Monthly health reports - regular reporting on animal health, welfare conditions, and inventory changes.

•  Design & specification oversight - enclosure, BOH, habitat, enrichment, and material specifications, together with animal-related design and 3D approvals.

•  Protocols & standards - documented husbandry, welfare, safety, feeding, and visitor-interaction protocols for the site.

•  Escalation reporting - immediate reporting of any risk to animal welfare, health, or safety.

6. Standards & Compliance

All work will be carried out in accordance with established professional and scientific standards, including:

•  Conservation status - IUCN Red List criteria, CITES listings, and applicable national wildlife regulations.

•  Welfare assessment - an internationally recognized welfare framework (Five Domains / Five Freedoms).

•  Regulatory compliance - all applicable local wildlife, animal-welfare, and biosafety regulations, including NCW requirements.

•  Data integrity - systematic recording, verification, and secure handling of all animal records.

7. Qualifications & Experience

The appointed Expert shall demonstrate:

•  A relevant degree in zoology, wildlife biology, veterinary science, or a comparable discipline.

•  Substantial experience in animal care, husbandry, and welfare management, ideally in a zoo, wildlife, or conservation setting.

•  Working knowledge of IUCN, CITES, and applicable national wildlife and welfare regulations.

•  Proven ability to establish standards, maintain records, and lead animal-care teams.

•  Any licences or permits required to conduct wildlife work in the relevant jurisdiction.
