Job Summary

The Site Archaeologist will be responsible for providing archaeological support, monitoring, documentation, and field supervision throughout construction and development activities where archaeological or cultural heritage resources may be present.

The role will ensure that archaeological findings and heritage resources are appropriately identified, documented, protected, and managed in accordance with project requirements, applicable Saudi regulations, heritage authority requirements, and recognized archaeological standards.

The successful candidate will work closely with construction, engineering, environmental, HSE, and project teams to ensure that construction activities are undertaken responsibly while minimizing risks to archaeological and cultural heritage assets.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

1. Conduct archaeological monitoring and field inspections during excavation, earthworks, grading, and other construction activities.
2. Identify, assess, and document potential archaeological remains, artefacts, structures, features, and cultural heritage resources encountered on site.
3. Undertake archaeological survey, excavation, test trenching, and recording where required by the project scope and approved archaeological methodology.
4. Maintain accurate archaeological records, including context sheets, field notes, photographs, plans, sections, registers, and site documentation.
5. Record and maintain archaeological stratigraphy and apply appropriate stratigraphic recording and Harris Matrix principles where applicable.
6. Supervise archaeological field activities and coordinate archaeological teams, subcontractors, and specialist personnel when required.
7. Monitor construction activities and provide timely advice where works may affect known or potential archaeological resources.
8. Coordinate with the Construction, Engineering, Environmental, HSE, and Survey teams to ensure archaeological requirements are incorporated into site activities.
9. Support archaeological surveys and site mapping using GPS, total station, GIS, and other appropriate field technologies.
10. Process, label, catalogue, and maintain records of recovered archaeological finds in accordance with approved procedures.
11. Support the preparation of archaeological assessment reports, monitoring reports, excavation reports, and heritage documentation.
12. Ensure archaeological records and databases are maintained accurately in both digital and physical formats.
13. Support the implementation of Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs), Archaeological Management Plans, and Chance Find Procedures where applicable.
14. Immediately report significant archaeological discoveries or potential heritage risks to the Project Manager and relevant heritage/environmental specialists.
15. Ensure archaeological activities are carried out in accordance with applicable Saudi heritage requirements, project specifications, approved archaeological methodologies, and professional standards.
16. Participate in site meetings, inspections, toolbox talks, and project coordination meetings where archaeological matters are relevant.
17. Provide archaeological awareness and guidance to construction personnel to help prevent accidental damage to heritage resources.
18. Maintain professional, accurate, and confidential records of archaeological discoveries and sensitive heritage information.
19. Work effectively in remote, desert, coastal, and physically demanding site environments, including varying weather conditions.
20. Support other archaeological, heritage, research, and site documentation activities as required by the project.

Requirements

Essential

• Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Archaeological Science, Anthropology, Heritage Studies, or a related field.
• Master's degree in Archaeology, Heritage Management, or a related discipline is an advantage.
• 3-7 years of relevant archaeological field experience, preferably within construction, infrastructure, development, cultural heritage, or major archaeological projects.
• Proven hands-on experience in archaeological excavation, field survey, stratigraphic recording, and archaeological documentation.
• Experience preparing and maintaining context sheets, site records, plans, sections, photographic records, and archaeological reports.
• Knowledge of archaeological finds processing, artefact recovery, classification, and cataloguing.
• Experience using GPS and total station for archaeological survey and site documentation.
• Knowledge of GIS applications, preferably QGIS or ArcGIS.
• Good understanding of archaeological field methodologies and cultural heritage protection principles.
• Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary construction and project teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work in remote and challenging site environments.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.
• Commitment to HSE requirements and safe working practices.

Desirable

• Previous experience working in Saudi Arabia or the GCC.
• Experience on major infrastructure, EPC, real estate, or large-scale construction projects.
• Experience with Chance Find Procedures and archaeological monitoring during construction.
• Familiarity with Saudi cultural heritage and archaeological regulations.
• Experience with photogrammetry, remote sensing, drone survey support, or 3D archaeological documentation.
• Knowledge of CIfA professional standards and Code of Conduct.
• Experience with AutoCAD/CAD-based archaeological plans.
• Arabic language proficiency is an advantage.
• Experience working in multicultural and international project teams.
• Valid driving licence is an advantage.
