Senior Backend Engineer (Python / Django)

Location: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

About LIMO

LIMO is a Saudi ride-hailing platform expanding across the Kingdom. We are strengthening our technology platform to support growing demand, reliable real-time dispatching, and nationwide expansion.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer specializing in Python and Django to take hands-on ownership of our backend development, code quality, architecture, and production infrastructure.

This is a highly technical engineering position. We are not looking for a general IT professional, project manager, or engineering coordinator. We need an experienced developer who can work deeply within an existing codebase, review other developers' work, troubleshoot complex production issues, and independently make sound technical decisions.

The successful candidate will work closely with our remote engineering team to improve platform performance, reliability, security, and scalability.

Experience with ride-hailing, geolocation, real-time dispatching, or other high-volume transactional platforms is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities1. Backend Development and Code Quality

• Lead hands-on development, maintenance, and optimization of LIMO's Python/Django backend.
• Write, debug, review, and optimize production-level code.
• Design, develop, and maintain REST APIs and backend services for Android and iOS applications.
• Review pull requests and enforce coding standards, security, maintainability, and performance.
• Identify technical debt, architectural weaknesses, and recurring defects.
• Investigate complex backend issues and implement permanent solutions.
• Guide other developers through technical decisions and code reviews.

2. Architecture, Performance, and Scalability

• Improve backend architecture to support increasing users, drivers, concurrent requests, and transactions.
• Optimize Django ORM, SQL queries, database transactions, indexing, and connection management.
• Diagnose race conditions, database locks, duplicate processing, and inconsistent application states.
• Design and optimize caching, background jobs, queues, and asynchronous processing.
• Conduct performance analysis and support load testing and scalability improvements.
• Ensure backend services remain reliable, secure, and maintainable as the platform grows.

3. Geolocation and Real-Time Dispatching

• Develop and maintain backend services supporting ride requests, driver availability, rider-driver matching, and trip lifecycle management.
• Troubleshoot dispatch algorithms, proximity-based assignment, dispatch radius, retries, timeouts, and fallback mechanisms.
• Work with GPS tracking, real-time location updates, geospatial queries, distance calculations, geofencing, routing, and ETA integrations.
• Investigate duplicate assignments, dispatch failures, incorrect driver states, delayed notifications, and inconsistent trip statuses.
• Ensure accurate handling of cancellations, trip completion, pricing, payments, and related transactions.
• Optimize location-based services and dispatch processing for increasing numbers of concurrent riders and drivers.

4. Cloud Infrastructure and Production Reliability

• Manage and optimize production backend infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Troubleshoot application servers, networking, deployments, database connectivity, Redis, background workers, and external services.
• Monitor server resources, API response times, errors, logs, and infrastructure health.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, environment configuration, monitoring, alerting, backups, and rollback procedures.
• Support load testing, infrastructure scaling, security, high availability, and disaster recovery.
• Investigate production incidents, identify root causes, and implement preventive measures.
• Review infrastructure changes and ensure releases meet production-readiness standards.

5. Databases, Caching, and Integrations

• Maintain and optimize MySQL databases, queries, indexes, transactions, and database performance.
• Implement and troubleshoot Redis caching and distributed-system patterns.
• Work with background workers, queues, scheduled jobs, and asynchronous tasks.
• Diagnose deadlocks, slow queries, connection exhaustion, cache inconsistencies, and concurrency issues.
• Integrate and troubleshoot Firebase and other third-party services.
• Understand interactions between backend services, databases, mobile applications, and infrastructure.

6. Mobile Integration and Technical Oversight

• Troubleshoot backend integrations with Android applications built using Kotlin and iOS applications built using Swift.
• Investigate API integration, authentication, data synchronization, push notification, and real-time update issues.
• Identify whether production issues originate in the mobile application, backend, database, infrastructure, or third-party services.
• Work directly with the remote engineering team to establish technical direction and development standards.
• Independently validate implementations through code reviews, testing, logs, and production behavior.
• Challenge incomplete solutions, investigate recurring defects, and ensure root causes are addressed.

Required Qualifications

Strong, hands-on Python/Django experience is mandatory. Candidates without substantial professional experience developing and maintaining production Django applications will not be suitable.

• At least 8 years of professional software development experience, including substantial backend engineering experience.
• Strong Python and Django expertise, including Django ORM, middleware, authentication, permissions, migrations, transactions, and performance optimization.
• Extensive experience designing, developing, and troubleshooting REST APIs.
• Strong MySQL and SQL skills, including query optimization, indexing, database locking, and transaction management.
• Practical experience with Redis, caching, queues, background jobs, and asynchronous processing.
• Experience deploying and maintaining production systems on Google Cloud Platform or a comparable cloud environment.
• Ability to independently read, debug, review, and improve complex existing codebases.
• Experience diagnosing production incidents and implementing reliable technical solutions.
• Strong understanding of application security, software architecture, scalability, and performance.
• Experience with Git, pull requests, automated testing, Docker, CI/CD, and production deployments.
• Ability to make independent technical decisions and provide hands-on technical leadership.
• Strong English communication skills.

Preferred Industry and Technical Experience

Candidates with experience in the following areas will receive strong preference:

• Ride-hailing and on-demand platforms: Taxi booking, ride-hailing, food delivery, logistics, or similar real-time services.
• Geolocation and mapping: GPS tracking, live driver locations, geospatial queries, geofencing, distance calculations, routing, and ETA integrations.
• Real-time dispatch: Dispatch algorithms, driver-rider matching, proximity-based assignment, dispatch retries, driver availability, and dynamic dispatch radius.
• High-concurrency systems: Race conditions, duplicate processing, state synchronization, transactional consistency, and high-volume workloads.
• Real-time communication: WebSockets or similar technologies, Firebase Cloud Messaging, push notifications, and real-time status updates.
• Cloud infrastructure: GCP, Cloudflare, DNS, CDN, WAF, networking, monitoring, and production security.
• Mobile integrations: Troubleshooting backend integrations with Kotlin-based Android and Swift-based iOS applications.

Hands-on Python/Django experience in ride-hailing, dispatching, geolocation, or real-time marketplace platforms is a significant advantage.
